MissionThe mission of the Amani Public Charter School is to provide Mount Vernon, New York students in the 5th through 8th grade with the academic skills necessary to succeed in competitive high school programs, college and the career of their choice.
SUMMER READING ASSIGNMENT 2015
This includes reading lists for incoming 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grades, along with a reading log due on the first day of school. Our summer assignment requires each student to read a minimum of three books before school begins. We recommend each child read for at least 20 minutes per day.
Amani offers a standards-based, rigorous academic curriculum, with a strong focus on literacy and numeracy. Our program is based on best practices for middle schools and is heavily influenced by the No Excuses Model. This model has proven effective in raising student achievement levels in at-risk student populations.
Great teaching drives student achievement. We are fortunate to have a highly qualified faculty committed to the middle school model and to teaching in an urban environment. We expect teachers to be passionate about their content area and reflective about their practice. They are the champions of the Amani community.
Our school is a small, structured environment, marked by rules and routines. In order for learning to take place, there are clear expectations for behavior and a consistent approach to school discipline. Our students are in school more time each day and more weeks each year than regular public schools.
