What grades can I apply to?

How much is tuition?

We are tuition free! Amani is a free public charter school. We offer free textbooks, free breakfast and free lunch.

 

Does my child have to take a test to be admitted into the school?

No. Amani is open to everyone from grades 5-8.

 

What is the total number of students in the school?

We have approximately 355 students each year.

 

How many students are assigned per class?

On average each class is made up of about 18-24 students.

 

What is a typical school day schedule like for a 5th grade scholar?

*On Wednesdays scholars follow a different schedule and are dismissed at 1:00 pm.

 

What athletic teams are available?

Girls Basketball, Boys Basketball, Lower School Basketball, Soccer, Track, Flag Football, Cheerleading and Step. Try-outs are required for all teams. Most teams offer beginner and advanced levels.

 

Does Amani provide additional academic support?

Yes.  Some examples of the additional support we provide include: after school classes, Saturday classes, and small group instruction throughout the day. We are also happy to provide additional resources to help scholars not only meet their grade standards but exceed them.

 

Does Amani provide lunch?

Yes. We provide a free healthy breakfast and lunch daily. Lunch menus are posted online monthly for your convenience. Scholars are allowed to bring in their preferred lunch with them in the morning.

 

Is transportation provided?

No. As a middle school we do not offer transportation to and from school. Scholars may request a student MetroCard at a discounted rate. We can also recommend a private bus service company that is available if you would like your child to be picked up and dropped off daily.

 

Is technology available for students?

Yes. Amani is a 1:1 program.  All scholars will receive a Google Chromebook to be used both inside and outside of school and have access to the full suite of Google for Education applications.  

 

Are students required to wear uniforms?

Yes. Students are required to wear the Amani academic or athletic uniform, depending on the schedule. Guardians/parents are responsible for the purchase of uniforms.

 

Are Scholars with Special Education needs offered services ?

Amani Public Charter School provides a full continuum of services for students with disabilities.  The programs provided are determined by Mount Vernon’s Committee of Special Education (CSE) recommendations. The CSE recommends programs for students based on individual student needs.  Amani Public Charter School is committed to creating alignment for each CSE recommendation.  

 

What is offered for scholars that are English Language Learners?

Amani welcomes scholars, and their families, who are English Language Learners (ELL’s) to our school community. As we engage our scholars in the English language, we support them in developing a more profound understanding of their cultures, as well as the varied cultures in the United States and in the world.

 

What makes Amani different from the rest? 

Amani has a school culture unlike any other school.  We focus on developing the whole child including: social/emotional development through our Advisory program and Dancing Classrooms; academic skills through our curriculum and extra support opportunities; and civic engagement in our community by inviting special guest speakers, scholar trips, and service opportunities.
